Plastic is one of the most popular and useful materials of modern times and it is important that we optimize the life of plastic as much as possible. Worldwide, we produce 300 million tons of plastic a year, and most people are reusing and plastic recycling.

    Why is plastic recycling important?
Plastic is a popular and versatile material, and we use it a lot. Reusing and recycling items over and over can reduce our need to create new plastic.

    This means we can:

    • non-renewable fossil fuel (oil) conservation

    • reduce energy consumption used in the production of new plastics

    • Reduce the amount of solid waste going to landfill

    • reduce emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
    How is plastic recycled?
    Plastics are:

    • Classification by polymer type

    • Cut into piecs

    • Wash

    • Melting

    • Pelletised

    • Manufacturing into new products.
    This is a two-stage process:

    • Sorting is mainly done automatically with manual sorting to ensure all contaminants have been removed.

    • Once sorted and cleaned, the plastic can be shredded or melted to form pellets before finally being molded into a new product.
There are different types of plastic in use. While we are already able to recycle some of these in the UK, there are ongoing major investments in the technology needed to expand the range of plastic materials we can recycle. , including items such as those used to make flexible bags. While many different types of plastic are being recycled, some are still being landfilled, incinerated or shipped overseas for recycling.

    Compostable plastic
Some plastics may say they are compostable in a home composter. However, these plastics should not go into your dry recycling collection or garden bin, as they cannot be recycled in the same way as non-biodegradable plastics.

Understanding the symbols on plastic packaging
Sometimes it can be confusing to understand how to recycle certain items. Symbols on plastic packages can help explain what plastic they are made of and how to recycle them.
