PP is a hard semi-crystalline thermoplastic with high toughness and strength. It offers great flexibility in colors produced in opaque or transparent form. Its lighter density allows it to be used in applications where weight saving is an important factor.

Polypropylene, or polypropylene, is often shortened to PP. It is the second most widely used commodity plastic after polyethylene (PET).

What is PP plastic used for?

The properties of polypropylene (PP) find themselves in a number of industries. The resin's excellent chemical resistance and very high melting point (about 20°F) mean it can withstand steam sterilization methods for effective disinfection of germs, fungi, and parasites. fruit. This makes it the ideal choice for medical applications, medical devices, the food container industry and those requiring heat-resistant applications.( See more: PP Natural Regrind )

PP is used in the automotive industry to make automobile dashboards, bumpers, cladding and exterior trim and internal components due to its lightweight and flexible qualities.

In the packaging, there are many applications, some of which you may not recognize. In its versatile form, it has replaced cellophane, metal and paper due to its lower cost and superior properties. So you will see it as flexible film and packaging of tobacco, clothing, food and confectionery.

Another element of the material's properties is its ability to trap perspiration on the skin. As a result, it has added cold-weather base classes for winter sports and warm-weather options for summer activities.

In its solid form, PP is used in lids and packaging, pallets, crates, bottles and jars for the packaging of toiletries and cleaning products, for example. It is also used for thin-walled containers such as yogurt jugs and disposable hot beverage cups.

    Sustainability

PP is said to have the smallest environmental impact of all plastics because we can recycle items into many parts and applications. It produces less solid waste by weight and less CO2 equivalent by weight than PET or PVC.

    Recycled PP

PP is a recyclable thermoplastic polymer. It is resistant to various chemical solvents, acids and bases which means it can be recycled many times with limited degree of deterioration. The resulting material will be black or gray. As a result, it is most commonly recycled into battery cables, brooms, brushes, bins, and trays instead of being returned to consumer-facing packaging.(See more:pP Jumbo Bag Grade)

Global brands, wanting to prove their sustainable credibility are now investing heavily in their own industrial applications for PP recycling. The ambitious goal is to return the plastic to its pristine state to be manufactured into another bottle or cap. Procter & Gamble are industry leaders in this area, read more on our blog.

PP plastic is coded with the plastic identification number "5" inside the common recycling symbol.

    PP packaging

At Plastic Bottle Company, most of our caps are made of PP. It can be used to create extremely thin pieces of plastic that withstand high levels of physical stress, like the lids of shampoo and lotion bottles. It can also withstand twisting movements up to 360 degrees without breaking, which makes it the ideal material for closures.
